The 1 Question You Should Ask Yourself at the Start of the New Year

Happy 2024!

New Year’s resolutions are what people seem to talk about at this time of year. Should you make them? Are they useful or self-defeating?

A recent video we created for our client makes me think of a different and perhaps more effective idea.

The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) is a member organization that serves the people who work at and run community health centers across the U.S. Community health centers care for the most underserved of our population. They often lack food, housing, and access to transportation and have some of the most prevalent health issues – obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

This is hard work. Patient and provider conversations can change on a dime. Burnout and stress levels are high.

What did my client NACHC want to do? Give their members inspiration to help them feel good about what they do and keep going.

Enter the “Why” video. We asked people working in community health centers for several years what keeps them going and why they do what they do. Watch the video to hear what they had to say.

How does this translate to you?

You may be fully engaged with your career. Or you may be on a career break or retired. You might be a full-time caregiver or live alone. Whatever stage in life you’re experiencing right now, rather than thinking about a New Year’s resolution – figure out your why.

Why do you get up each morning? What motivates and excites you? You may have heard the Japanese concept of Ikigai, which means “your reason for being” or your life purpose or bliss. You can even have more than one reason for getting up in the morning.

But if you can make sure you have a meaningful “Why,” I think that is a better way to ensure a happy and productive year.
