“A Day Without Questions.” That is the birthday gift my husband asks me to give him each year. His birthday was a few days ago.
Did I make his wish come true? No, I did not.
To be honest, he gave up on this dream years ago. He knows it’s built into my DNA to ask questions. I can’t help myself. I am a journalist by nature, with an insatiable curiosity. I ask a lot of questions. All of the time.
It’s the reason why I love my job so much. I get to ask questions to people from all walks of life. My colleague likes to say we get to be nosey for a living, but I prefer to think of it as a tremendous opportunity to meet fascinating people.
I get to find out how people overcame adversity, and do it in a way that hopefully connects with and helps others.
This video clip features Felicia Holmes, a formerly homeless woman who has achieved so much with the help of the nonprofit Housing Up getting her into a fully furnished apartment. She shared some of her hardest moments with us, and I was so grateful for her willingness to answer my questions and share her journey. (Watch the entire video here.)
The next time I see you, I apologize ahead of time if you are someone that doesn’t like to be asked questions. It’s my way of connecting to and understanding other humans.
And because I love to ask questions – I will end with a question – how do you feel about people asking you questions? Do you love it? Hate it? Neutral? Please write your answer in the comments below. You know I would love to know the answer!
