Valentine’s Day Alternatives to Candy and Flowers

In my house, Valentine’s Day feels a lot like Halloween in February.  (The boys’ jack-o-lanterns aren’t even empty and suddenly there’s an onslaught of red-wrapped candy!)  I have a huge sweet tooth, but I’d like to share some ways you can make this Valentine’s Day about showing love to your family, and maybe save a little money at the dentist to boot.

Chalkboard Matryoshkas

Digital photo frames are still a great way to show off your brood, but how about something a little more creative and memorable?

These whimsical tsotchkes caught my eye in a recent issue of Parenting magazine. Use your creative skills to make something clever, like these cute Chalkboard Matryoshkas. Or make your family out of clay with these clever clay family replicas.

Handpainted serving platter

There are lots of ways to pay homage to your nearest and dearest, from the popular Family Car Stickers to customized cookie jars or handpainted serving platters.

How about treating Grandma to a set of magnets featuring her favorite munchkins?

Original Superhero Portrait

For a spouse that really saves the day, spring for an original superhero portrait of the whole gang.

You can get creative and make your own family gift…how about coming up with a personalized board game to bring everyone together for some quality playtime? You can still enjoy those Valentines chocolates…pink and white M&Ms make the perfect game snack.

Invent fun and lasting family traditions this Valentine's Day by thinking less about sweets and more about the sweet fun that comes from creating something original. I guarantee it will far outlast the inevitable candy that's coming your way...
